Revising the History of Nitchevo with Text Archives

This article focuses on the way nitchevo, a nineteenth-century Russian borrowing, was adopted into English language. In order to investigate history of word, six digital text archives were considered. The results research are promising: not only do they allow one trace antedatings for both senses, which updates treatment nitchevo in Oxford Dictionary (OED), but also shed light its semantic development, spelling variation, and route transmission. Tellingly, albeit unsurprisingly, evidence suggests that press is responsible boosting recognition word sides Atlantic. All this indicates potential modern tools, including British American newspaper archives, remains be fully explored.
